The Miraculous Mission of Dr. Mary Neal & The Spiritual Call To Action

August 1, 2025 by Mark Anthony

The Miraculous Mission of Dr. Mary Neal & The Spiritual Call To Action — We’ve all heard the expression, “When one door closes, another door opens.” Often, the door that closes involves tragedy and loss. On the flip side of the karmic coin, we grow in response to adversity. If everything in your life were perfect, prosperous, loving, and easy, why would you ever want to change that? Yet living in the material world involves constant change. Inevitably, a door will close, but the one that opens may be a portal to another dimension, leading to your spiritual call to action.

No one exemplifies this more than Dr. Mary Neal. And with Mary, the waters run deep, literally and figuratively. After graduating from UCLA Medical School, she became a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon and rose to the esteemed position of Director of Spine Surgery at USC. Dr. Neal was happily married to Bill, who was also an orthopedic surgeon. They were the proud parents of three sons and a daughter. As a family, they were avid outdoor adventurers. Mary was “living the life.”

In 1999, Mary was on an adventure in Chile with her husband, Bill, and some friends. They were all seasoned kayakers looking forward to the challenging Fuy River. One morning, though, Mary’s husband, Bill, decided to pass on a kayaking trip.

Mary and her friends entered the Fuy River, whose rapids created constantly changing conditions. One of Mary’s fellow kayakers inadvertently blocked the less turbulent path over a waterfall, which caused Mary to change course, drawing her into a more forceful water flow. Suddenly, she was dragged over the falls. Her kayak sank, and she was trapped underwater at the base of the falls. Pounded by tons of water, her body bent in half, her legs broken as they bent backwards from the knees. Her fellow kayakers couldn’t reach her due to the sheer force of the water. They watched in horror as Mary drowned.

It appeared the door had closed on her life, but another door opened. As Mary described, “I was acutely aware of everything that was happening. I knew that my efforts to exit the boat were not working, that I was out of air, and that I was too far from the riverbank for anyone to reach me. I knew that I would probably die. Having grown up with a fear of drowning, I was surprised to find my transition from life to death was seamless, peaceful, and beautiful. I felt quite wonderful.”

Mary had been transported to another dimension during what is known as a near-death experience (NDE). Mary entered a light and was surrounded by several spiritual beings. She felt an overwhelming sense of God’s love, forgiveness, intense peace, and beauty. Although Mary had no desire to return to Earth, she was given a list of things she was expected to do and experience. It was also conveyed that her son Willie would die, but through that experience, she was to inspire other people to seek God and experience the joy that is contained within a spiritual path.

Meanwhile, back in the material world, Mary had been underwater for 30 minutes. Hope had drained from her fellow kayakers until suddenly her body disengaged from the submerged kayak, rose to the surface, and bumped into one of her friends. They pulled Mary to shore. She was bloated and purple from extended hypothermia and oxygen deprivation. Mary appeared dead. Even if she could be revived, the best-case scenario would be severe brain damage. Nonetheless, CPR was initiated, and miraculously, Mary started breathing.

But Mary wasn’t out of the woods yet, literally or figuratively. The kayakers were in a desolate jungle location miles from towns, much less hospitals or ambulances. She had severe orthopedic injuries and needed immediate medical attention.

Creating a makeshift stretcher from a kayak, her fellow travelers saw there was no way through the jungle. Unexpectedly, several young Chilean men miraculously emerged from the jungle. They carried Mary on the kayak-stretcher into the dense jungle to a path which led to an unpaved road. Defying any rational explanation, an ambulance just happened to be there—literally in the middle of nowhere.

Synchronistically, while Mary was drowning, a fellow kayaker fled the scene in search of help and somehow found Mary’s husband, Bill. He raced to the scene, arriving in the nick of time at the remote location where Mary was being loaded into the ambulance. The young Chilean men who had appeared precisely at the right time and in the right place to carry Mary through the jungle were nowhere to be found. Who—or what—were they?

At the first aid station in the nearby village of Choshuenco, Bill sprang into action, applied splints to Mary’s legs, and stabilized her condition so she could be airlifted back to the US for medical treatment. After several months of grappling with serious orthopedic injuries, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome, Mary miraculously fully recovered.

Dr. Mary Neal is a no-nonsense surgeon and analytical thinker who is all about facts, evidence, and data. She’s tried to come up with a medical explanation for what she experienced. She has tried to disprove her own experiences. But her only conclusion was that she had been sent back to her body from a place she calls Heaven.

And then, a few years later, just as she’d been told during her NDE, Mary’s son Willie died tragically in an accident.

These events were Dr. Mary Neal’s spiritual call to action to share her experience and insights. She’s reached millions globally through her books, appearances on TV, radio, and conferences. The spiritual call to action takes us out of our comfort zone. As Mary has said, “I have always been a private person, am not known to be a writer, and do not relish the attention of speaking… But I am a scientist by training, a skeptic by nature, and a very concrete, rational thinker. Perhaps I was given this job because I have developed a lifetime of credibility.”

My manager, Rocky, and I have gotten to know Mary since we’ve both been speakers at the International Association for Near-Death Studies and Helping Parents Heal.

Mary asked Rocky if I would conduct a reading for her. While many of my clients are celebrities and high-profile people, my policy is to avoid learning anything about my clients prior to a reading. I’ve instituted this quality control procedure to guarantee the authenticity of the contact. Skeptics of mediumship assert that mediums research their clients prior to the reading. My protocol is to make sure that what I’m presenting from a spirit is something I didn’t know ahead of time.

Dr. Mary Neal’s near-death experience and the tragic passing of her son are quite well known. Yet spirits have a way of authenticating their contact.

Mary’s spiritual mission includes her podcast “A Brighter Day.” I was honored when she asked me to be one of her guests. She indicated she’d be in Florida, so Rocky invited Mary to stay with her to do the interview. We planned that I’d come to Rocky’s at 10 AM, we’d do the interview, and then after that, I would conduct a mediumship reading for Mary.

It was 5 AM the morning of the reading, and I snapped awake. My mind’s eye filled with an image of a heart-shaped piece of tiger’s eye, followed by an auditory message in my mind’s ear, “Give this tiger’s eye heart to my mother.”

If this wasn’t a spiritual call to action, I don’t know what was. I leapt from bed and found the small, heart-shaped piece of tiger’s eye I’ve had for years.

Later that morning, I arrived at Rocky’s to do the interview. I presented Mary with the tiger’s eye heart and told her what happened and why I was giving it to her.

I explained that during readings, spirits often present me with images of birthstones to signify a particular month. For example, a sapphire is the birthstone for September, meaning a significant birth, death, anniversary, or event within September.

“Here’s the interesting part, Mary,” I explained. “While topaz is the birthstone for November, I never get an image of topaz for November—instead, I always see tiger’s eye for November.”

Mary gazed at the tiger’s eye heart, which she held in her hands. Then, she looked me in the eyes and said, “My son Willie’s birthday was in November.”
