Why Feeling Retriggered Isn’t Failure—It’s a Sign You’re Expanding

Why Feeling Retriggered Isn’t Failure—It’s a Sign You’re Expanding – I see you there. You’re doing the inner work. You’ve done the journaling, the coaching, the shadow work, and the breathwork. You’re meditating, drinking magnesium, and avoiding the one person on Instagram who makes you question your entire existence … then BAM. You’re triggered. Again.

Welcome to the world of retriggering.

If you’ve ever spiraled into frustration wondering, “Why is this STILL an issue? I thought I healed this!” —This is for you. Every client I’ve had who has faced a similar upset (retrigger) says, “But I’ve dealt with this!” And the universe giggles.

What Is Retriggering?

Retriggering happens when an old wound, pattern, or belief resurfaces, often when you least expect it. You feel it in your body first: maybe a tight chest, racing thoughts, or a knee-jerk reaction to a situation not actually in your current reality (aka “worry”).

It’s not a sign of failure. It’s a sign that your nervous system has found a familiar potential danger pattern and has hit autopilot.

Here’s what most people get wrong: retriggering doesn’t mean you’re back at the beginning. It means your system is revisiting an old pathway with new awareness. You’re not stuck! You’re cycling through a spiral. One is moving upward. Yes, even when it doesn’t feel like it. #TwoStepsForward

The Brain’s Loop Mode: Why Retriggering Feels So Real

Let’s get nerdy for a second. Your brain loves patterns. It has the incredible ability to store, retrieve, and activate emotional memories when a “cue” appears, whether it’s a tone of voice, a facial expression, or even a scent. (The research says we take in about 32 GIGS of information every day.)

What I call the “cue-triggered response” sends your nervous system a signal: “Danger, Will Robinson!” Whether it’s physical, emotional, or social danger, your system doesn’t ask, “Is this current?” It just reacts.

Cue the adrenaline, the old story, and the impulse to react in an old way to stay safe. You might snap. You might freeze. You might use your 8-year-old coping mechanisms. You might people-please your way into a migraine. Again.

This is not regression. This is your body trying to protect you. And when we can understand this, we get our power back.

Here’s what’s happening. Something in your current reality is acting like a cue, reminding your system of a past inciting event or original upset. The cue sets off an echo reaction, but this doesn’t mean you’re back there. It means you’ve got a new choice point.

You’re Not Backsliding—You’re Expanding

Retriggering often means you’re growing into a new version of yourself. A bolder version. A boundary-setting version. A version who says, “Actually, no,” or “I’m not available for this anymore.” And guess what? Your old neural wiring will throw a tantrum.

It’s not sabotage. It’s biology.

Healing doesn’t always look like peace and candles. Sometimes it looks like crying in the car after standing up for yourself. Sometimes it looks like saying “yes” and then texting “actually, I can’t make it” two hours later because your body screamed louder than your habit to overcommit.

Healing is messy. And retriggering is a part of the process—not a sign you’ve failed, but that you’re reprocessing. Rebuffering.

Here’s What You Can Do When It Happens:
1. Notice, Without Shaming Yourself.

Your inner bully will try to take over. “Ugh, you’re doing this again? Haven’t you grown past this?” Nope. Not today, Mr. Meanie.

Notice what’s happening without adding judgment to the mix. Say, “Oh. I’m retriggered. Got it. My system thinks I’m unsafe.”

This awareness alone changes your relationship to the trigger.

2. Regulate Your Nervous System.

Before you can reframe, you’ve got to re-regulate.

  • Breathe slowly, hum, shake your hands out, and press your feet into the floor. Use bilateral tapping. Remind your system: You are safe. You are now.
  • Movement helps discharge adrenaline. Words help rewire the pattern.
3. Get Curious.

Ask yourself, What does this remind me of? What belief or fear is showing up right now?

Sometimes, retriggering is tied to a deeper fear—rejection, abandonment, failure, or even success. Identifying it gives you more choice.

You don’t have to believe every thought popping up. Especially not the old ones wrapped in shame or fear.

4. Choose a New Action (Even a Tiny One)

This is where the gold is. Once you’ve paused and regulated, even a small new action helps you reclaim power. It gives your brain a TARGET.

Say no when you’d usually say yes. Speak your truth in a gentle tone. Walk away instead of explaining yourself.

These tiny shifts tell your brain, We don’t live there anymore.

Your Triggers Are Teachers

Your triggers are not proof you’re broken. They are proof you’re wired to survive. And now? You’re learning to thrive.

Retriggering is your brain giving you another chance to respond instead of react. To choose instead of collapse. To move forward with power instead of shrinking in shame.

You’re not doing it wrong; you’re doing it differently with more wisdom, more skills, and a bigger toolbox.

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to notice, pause, and choose.

“Feeling retriggered doesn’t mean you’re failing—it means you’re doing it differently. Healing isn’t linear. Every trigger gives you another chance to choose, respond, and move through with power.”– Theresa Byrne

In Case No One Told You Today:
  • You’re not too much.
  • You’re not behind.
  • And you’re definitely not broken.

Retriggering is a sign you’re human. And healing. If you need support, I offer sessions to help calm your nervous system.

So the next time an old (unwanted) pattern rears its gnarly head? Smile. Nod. And remind yourself, “I see you. We’ve met before. But I don’t hang out here anymore.” It’s handled with care. If you’re an empath, know you don’t have to suffer under the weight of the world. You can learn to hold space for others without losing yourself in the process. And that’s true empowerment.
