Sip Happens: Slowing Down Your Drinking Without Becoming a Buzzkill

October 1, 2025 by Dr. Cali Estes

Sip Happens: Slowing Down Your Drinking Without Becoming a Buzzkill – Let’s get real: alcohol and I used to be tight. We laughed, we danced, and we stayed out way too late. But at some point, that “one drink” turned into three… then five… and suddenly, I was texting my ex while eating cold nachos in my bathtub at 2 a.m. Classy.

Now, I’m not here to preach from a mountain of kombucha and celery juice. I’m Dr. Cali Estes, the Addiction Coach, and yes—I help people quit, cut back, or totally reframe their relationship with alcohol. But I’m also a fan of humor, realness, and the idea that change doesn’t have to be a dramatic exit from society where you start churning your own butter in the woods. We’re not doing that. Unless you really love butter.

So, how do you actually slow down your drinking without turning into that person who orders tap water and lectures your brunch crew about liver function? Let’s dive in, one awkward, wine-splattered step at a time.

1. Know Your “Why” (Even If It’s Just to Avoid Drunk Online Shopping)

First off, ask yourself why you want to slow down. Is it because you’re waking up with more regrets than Instagram likes? Or maybe your “hangovers” now last three business days and come with bonus anxiety? (“Did I tell my boss I loved her?”)

Knowing your why gives your brain a reason to say “no thanks” when the next round appears. You don’t need to write a manifesto—just be honest. Even “I want to fit into my jeans again and not drunk cry to Adele” is a valid reason.

2. Don’t Quit Cold Turkey (Unless You Want to Fight a Turkey)

Here’s the deal: if you go from “Wine Wednesday” to “Sober Saint” overnight, your brain will riot. Your body and habits are used to that glass of wine after work or that IPA with dinner. Yanking it away all at once can backfire.

Instead, try slowing your roll. Cut back a few nights a week. Swap your third drink for sparkling water with lime and a smug grin. Trick yourself. You’re clever. You can do this.

3. Change the Scenery (And Stop Hanging Out With That One Friend Who Says, ‘Just One More!’)

Let’s be honest—some environments practically require you to drink. Like that bar where you “watch the game” but don’t remember who played. Or Susan’s house, where margaritas flow like it’s Cinco de Mayo every Tuesday.

Start by shaking up your social plans. Try activities that don’t revolve around booze: hiking, escape rooms, pottery (seriously, it’s therapeutic), or even just coffee with friends who don’t think mimosas are a food group.

Also, you may need to lovingly ghost that one friend who thinks moderation is a conspiracy theory. You know the one.

4. Rebrand Drinking Like It’s a Bad Ex

It’s time for a mindset shift. Stop romanticizing booze like it’s George Clooney with a six-pack and a rescue dog.

Yes, drinking has fun memories attached. But it’s also stolen your Saturdays, sabotaged your fitness goals, and convinced you that karaoke was a good idea. So instead of “rewarding” yourself with alcohol, try something else: a new show, a bath, a ridiculously overpriced face mask, or even dancing in your kitchen like nobody’s filming (but they probably are; check your teen’s TikTok).

5. Make It a Game (Because Adults Deserve Gold Stars, Too)

Use that Type-A energy for good. Set a goal: “Only two drinks tonight” or “no drinking on weekdays.” Track your wins. Reward yourself. Get nerdy with it.

There are apps for this stuff. There are challenges, like Dry January, Sober October, or “No Booze ‘Til I Can Look at My Credit Card Bill Without Crying.” Whatever works for you.

When you see progress, celebrate it—just not with tequila shots, okay?

6. Watch for the Sneaky Triggers (Like Todd from Accounting)

Sometimes we drink because we’re stressed, bored, or just trying to make it through dinner with our in-laws. Start noticing the patterns. When do you really want a drink?

Then figure out your go-to distraction. That could be taking a walk, calling a friend, screaming into a pillow (hey, it’s honest), or doing literally anything other than pouring a glass of wine out of habit.

And if Todd from Accounting is always testing your Zen, maybe it’s time to talk boundaries—or switch lunch tables.

7. Get Support (Or at Least a Buddy Who Won’t Tempt You with Bottomless Brunch)

You don’t have to do this alone. Maybe you’re not ready for therapy or a 12-step group, and that’s cool. But find someone you can text when the craving hits or who won’t roll their eyes when you order a mocktail.

There are communities online and IRL that aren’t judge-y, preachy, or trying to sell you a miracle detox powder. (Run from those.) At The Addictions Academy, we train coaches who help people just like you—people who want to cut back without giving up their entire social life or identity.

Final Sip (Er, Thought…)

Slowing down your drinking doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re paying attention. You’re adulting in the best way—without losing your sense of humor or love for a good time.

Remember: you’re not alone, you’re not boring, and you’re not broken. You’re just evolving.

And trust me, waking up hangover-free, hydrated, and with all your Amazon packages still in the cart instead of on your doorstep? That’s the real party.

Dr. Cali Estes is a renowned addiction therapist, founder of The Addictions Academy, and author of I Married a Junkie. When she’s not helping people live their best (and sober-ish) lives, she’s probably lifting weights, wrangling dogs, or drinking coffee that could legally be considered rocket fuel.rve energy. You deserve a life that’s sweet… without licking the spoon.

Well, you know it ends. The question is, how did we get here? The saying goes, ‘There are only three ways out of addiction: death, institutions, and jail.’ Tim managed all of them in one lifetime.

This book is the raw, uncut truth behind what happened that led to his death. Multiple overdoses, car crashes, hit-and-runs, police arrests, and even SWAT were no match for his addiction. If that doesn’t shock you, what happened AFTER he died will.
