Burnout to Balance: A New Way Forward

Burnout to Balance: A New Way Forward — Why blending human coaching with smart technology is the new path to holistic success. At the start of this year, everything came to a screeching halt. In the midst of grieving family loss, juggling endless meetings, and pushing through an overwhelming workload, I landed in the ER with a serious health scare. I’ve shared parts of that story in this magazine before. For months, my body had been whispering warnings. But like so many driven professionals, I kept going until it finally screamed. I was on the edge of complete burnout and experienced a life-threatening medical crisis. And I now realize: I’m far from alone.

According to Gallup, 76% of employees experience burnout at least sometimes, and the World Health Organization now officially classifies burnout as an occupational phenomenon, characterized by exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy.

We’re living in a time when burnout isn’t the exception; it’s the norm. Especially for entrepreneurs, executives, and mission-driven professionals who give everything they’ve got and rarely slow down. It happens at home, too. But what happens when the very thing that drives us also threatens to destroy us?

That’s the question I had to face this year. And it led me back to something I’ve always believed in, but now I see more clearly than ever: transformation requires support.

THE ILLUSION OF TOUGHING IT OUT

For years, I built Ingomu to be a platform where people could access expert coaching support to build resilience, purpose, and personal growth, especially in their professional lives. We help companies support their teams with live coaching, progress tracking, and even an AI component that helps keep users on track between sessions.

But even while building that system, I fell into a common trap: thinking I could do it all myself.

Like so many of us, I internalized the “just push through” mindset. The meetings didn’t stop. The expectations didn’t shrink. And neither did the mission I believed in. But without realizing it, I was depleting every reserve—mental, physical, and emotional—until there was nothing left.

That ER visit and weeks in the hospital weren’t a detour. It was a wake-up call!

WHAT I DID TO TURN THINGS AROUND

Burnout recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey, but here’s what worked for me and what I now encourage friends, our coaching clients, and company partners to explore:

1. Reclaim the Pause

The first thing I did was stop. That sounds simple, but it’s radical when you’ve built your identity around movement and momentum. I cleared non-essential meetings. I carved out recovery space, real rest, not “catch-up-on-email” rest.

Actionable Tip: Schedule unscheduled time every day. Even 15-20 minutes of unplugged stillness can reset your nervous system.

2. Lean on Coaching (Yes, Even Me)

Even though I run a coaching company, I hadn’t prioritized being coached myself. Once I did, everything shifted. Coaches helped me reframe my expectations, build healthy boundaries, and reconnect with what actually fuels me beyond just performance metrics.

Actionable Tip: Find a coach (or accountability partner) who isn’t afraid to challenge you and ask the uncomfortable questions. Support systems aren’t a luxury—they’re a necessity.

3. Use Technology with Intention

One of the most helpful tools in my recovery was something I helped build: Ingomu’s AI-powered nudges and focus prompts. These small check-ins, such as “Have you taken a breath today?” and “Are you working on your most meaningful task?”, became anchors in my day—tiny shifts that helped me recalibrate before stress took over.

Actionable Tip: Use technology to build habits, not pressure. Apps like Ingomu, Calm, or even your phone’s reminders can help you re-center, reflect, and reset.

4. Redefine Success

My old definition of success was rooted in output, tasks completed, goals hit, and progress made. Now? It’s about sustainability. About leading with energy, not ego. About being present, not just productive. About how I want to feel being successful.

Actionable Tip: Redefine your daily success in three dimensions: Did I move my body? Did I calm my mind? Did I connect with someone meaningfully? If you hit two out of three, you’re winning.

WHAT WE’RE LEARNING FROM OUR USERS

At Ingomu, we’ve now supported thousands of individuals, professionals, teams, leaders, moms, and dads through their personal growth journeys. What we’re seeing is clear:

  • Coaching increases well-being by over 80% when integrated consistently.
  • Teams that access AI-supported check-ins and nudges report 30% higher goal follow-through than those who don’t.
  • Most importantly, people feel seen, supported, and connected, which might be the ultimate antidote to burnout.

WE DON’T BURN OUT BECAUSE WE’RE WEAK—WE BURN OUT BECAUSE WE’RE HUMAN

You might be reading this because you’ve felt it too, the fatigue, the dread, the emotional flatness that no coffee or weekend can fix. If so, I want you to know: you’re not broken. You’re likely operating in a system that doesn’t support your full humanity.

That’s why I believe in rebuilding from the inside out, with coaching, connection, and conscious technology.

You don’t have to quit your job. You don’t have to move to Bali. You don’t have to delete your calendar (although, maybe for a day).

You just have to start listening to what your body and spirit are already whispering.

FROM CRISIS TO CLARITY

My personal health scare wasn’t the end; it was a turning point. It reminded me that how we build matters just as much as what we build. And that impact without well-being isn’t sustainable; it’s burnout disguised as ambition.

So today, I invite you to do what I did: pause, reflect, and reach for support, whether it’s through a coach, an app, a conversation, or a deep breath.

Because your well-being isn’t a side project.

It’s the foundation of everything.

ACCEPTANCE: THE KEY TO TRANSFORMATION

Perhaps the greatest lesson from this experience isn’t about clarity—it’s about acceptance. Accepting that healing doesn’t follow a set timeline. Accepting that personal growth isn’t always dramatic. Accepting that the meaning of survival may not be clear today, next week, or even next year, but that doesn’t mean it won’t come.

Instead of searching for a singular, defining moment of transformation, consider embracing the journey itself. Maybe the lesson isn’t in the sudden shift but in the slow, quiet realization that life continues, moment by moment, breath by breath. That is perhaps the lesson I have learned from researching this topic.

In time, you may look back and realize that the clarity you sought was unfolding all along, just in a way you didn’t expect. That is what I am looking forward to discovering, even as I continue my own recovery journey, IV still attached, and steps still unsteady. Maybe, just maybe, the clarity is already there, waiting for me to recognize it.
