How to Suffer

How to Suffer – It seems that many people go through life suffering, but they often don’t realize they are doing it the wrong way.

To be a truly world-class sufferer, some requirements must be followed carefully. If you commit yourself to these rules, you can guarantee yourself a first-class ticket to misery. Ignore them, and you may accidentally end up with peace, joy, and happiness—so proceed with caution.

1. Worst-Case Scenario Thinking

The golden rule of suffering is always to imagine the worst possible outcome. Whenever life presents an unexpected event or a challenge, your first thought should be about the potential disasters that might follow. If you are given an opportunity, immediately think about all the ways it will collapse. If you are surprised by change, assume it will ruin your life. Panic is essential. Do not breathe profoundly or calm yourself; instead, hold your breath so your body goes into fight-or-flight mode. Trust and faith are forbidden—assume you will end up broke, abandoned, and ashamed.

2. Take Things Personally

For optimal suffering, interpret every action around you as a personal attack. Someone didn’t return your call? They must hate you. Someone forgot to invite you to lunch? They did it to wound you. You must believe that nothing in the universe happens without you being the direct target. God, fate, or karma is out to get you. Ignore blessings, kindness, or good fortune—they don’t count. Only misfortunes matter, so magnify them.

3. Your Will Be Done

True suffering requires believing your way is the only right way. If people disagree with you or if life doesn’t conform to your desires, assume that the fault lies entirely with others. Nothing is your responsibility. The idea that God or the universe may have better plans for you than you imagine must be rejected. Your way is supreme. If you don’t get what you want, sulk, panic, and shut down. Misery will surely follow.

4. The World is Conspiring Against

You always assume that the reason you don’t have what you desire—whether it’s wealth, love, or success—is because the world is deliberately against you. Don’t attribute setbacks to effort, discipline, or circumstance. Instead, conclude that life itself is unfairly targeting you. Spend hours researching all the ways society hates you. Assume a bullseye is painted on your back. Never, under any circumstances, take ownership of your choices. Victimhood is your most powerful weapon.

5. Life is Never Good Enough

This is a cornerstone of suffering. No matter what you achieve, look for someone who has more. If you buy a car, notice the person driving the luxury model and conclude you are worthless. If you cook a meal for friends, but they bring takeout, assume your efforts are meaningless. Never be content. Comparison is the thief of joy, and for suffering, you must embrace comparison fully. Happiness cannot coexist with envy, so make envy your constant companion.

6. Never Let Go

True sufferers cling to old wounds like cherished trophies. If someone insulted you decades ago, replay it endlessly in your mind. Relive betrayals, heartaches, and humiliations daily. Obsession is critical. Even if life improves, remind yourself constantly of how you were wronged. Gratitude, healing, and forgiveness are dangerous—they threaten to dismantle suffering. Reject them all.

7. Be a Hater

Misery loves company, so cultivate bitterness. If you are unhappy, spread it around. Draw others into gossip, criticism, and judgment. If someone is joyful, do your best to deflate their mood. Never encourage or uplift anyone, because kindness is toxic to suffering. Hate yourself, too. Self-love and compassion are poison; avoid them at all costs. Misery thrives in drama, so keep the melodrama alive.

8. Medicate

Sobriety is dangerous because it allows clarity. To perfect suffering, numb yourself with substances or distractions. Drink excessively, overeat, or lose yourself in endless scrolling. Embarrass yourself, make regrettable choices, and feed the cycle of shame. Reflection might reveal that you are responsible for your life, and we can’t have that. Stay medicated, stay foggy, and suffering will bloom.

9. Be Self-Centered

Another critical step is to shut out compassion. Don’t love, don’t give, and don’t serve. Assume your pain is unique and incomprehensible. Avoid kindness at all costs because showing empathy might lead to connection, and connection softens suffering. Take from others but never give. Hoard attention, pity, and validation. Self-absorption is the cornerstone of misery.

10. Sit on Your Butt

Finally, the perfect posture for suffering is inactivity. Sit around, snack on junk food, and complain. Never exercise, meditate, or cultivate discipline—those habits build resilience. Instead, fixate on how unfair life is. Avoid growth. Laziness ensures stagnation, and stagnation guarantees misery.

11. Be Right

Always cling to your perspective. Never entertain the thought that someone else might have a valid opinion. Say often, “I’m right and everyone else is wrong.” Alienate friends, coworkers, and even pets with your stubbornness. Isolation is fuel for suffering.

12. Lie Whenever Possible

Lies create chaos, and chaos breeds suffering. Lie to others, but more importantly, lie to yourself. Pretend you’re happy while you’re miserable. Pretend you’re successful when you’re struggling. Eventually, lies will entangle you in distrust and betrayal, and misery will multiply.

13. Never Take Responsibility

Responsibility empowers people, so reject it. Always claim to be a victim of life’s cruelty. If something goes wrong, it is always someone else’s fault. Victims never change, and change threatens suffering. Stay powerless and blame others.

14. Have Unreasonable Expectations

Set goals that are impossible to achieve and punish yourself for not reaching them. Demand perfection in everything you do. Beat yourself up daily for every perceived failure. Never practice gratitude or celebrate progress—focus only on shortcomings.

15. Covet Endlessly

Long for everything you don’t have. Envy your neighbor’s job, car, or relationships. Assume happiness lies outside yourself. Never water your own grass—just stare longingly at the other side of the fence. This guarantees chronic discontent.

16. Eat Poorly

Finally, to keep misery alive, fuel your body with garbage. Processed food, sugar, and chemicals will weaken your health and mind. Forget balance or nourishment. A sick body feeds a sick mind, and a sick mind guarantees suffering.

This guide is tongue-in-cheek, of course, but hidden within is the truth: if you avoid these behaviors, you will likely find yourself walking a very different path—the path of peace, joy, and genuine happiness.
