Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Brain Health, and Why the Details Matter

In wellness, it’s easy to get excited about tools that sound powerful—and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) certainly qualifies. A pressurized chamber. Pure oxygen. Claims range from faster recovery to improved brain function. I’ve heard them all.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned building Liquivida and working alongside physicians, researchers, athletes, and patients, it’s this:

The most important question is never “Does this work?” — it’s “For whom, under what conditions, and as part of what bigger picture?”

That’s exactly how I approach hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

What Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Actually Does

At its core, HBOT involves breathing near-pure oxygen inside a chamber pressurized above normal atmospheric levels. Under these conditions, oxygen dissolves directly into the blood plasma—not just red blood cells—allowing more oxygen to reach tissues throughout the body, including areas with compromised circulation. Oxygen under pressure behaves like a drug. It influences inflammation signaling, supports angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation), and plays a role in cellular repair pathways. This is why HBOT has long been used in hospital settings for conditions such as carbon monoxide poisoning, non-healing wounds, radiation injury, and decompression sickness.

Those applications are well established. Where things become more nuanced—and more interesting—is in the conversation around the brain.

Why Brain Health and TBI Are Part of the Discussion

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) isn’t a single condition. It exists on a spectrum, from severe acute trauma to mild injuries that leave people struggling for months or years with headaches, sleep issues, memory problems, mood changes, and that hard-to-describe cognitive fog.

Physiologically, TBIs can involve impaired blood flow, inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and altered oxygen utilization in the brain. On paper, that makes HBOT a compelling area of study. In practice, the research has been mixed.

Extensive reviews, including a Cochrane analysis, have concluded that evidence for HBOT in acute severe TBI remains inconsistent, with no clear consensus supporting routine use across all patients.

When it comes to persistent symptoms after mild TBI or concussion, some studies show improvement, while others demonstrate similar gains in placebo groups. That doesn’t mean the therapy is useless—it means brain recovery is complex, individualized, and difficult to measure cleanly.

For me, this reinforces a key principle:

No single therapy should be viewed in isolation.

A Conversation That Shaped My Perspective: Dr. Joseph “Deep Sea” Dituri

This belief was reinforced during a recent episode of the A Healthy Point of View podcast, where I sat down with Dr. Joseph “Deep Sea” Dituri.

Dr. Dituri is a Navy veteran, biomedical engineer, and world-record holder for living 100 consecutive days underwater—but more importantly, he’s a traumatic brain injury survivor.

After a serious car accident left him with a hemorrhagic stroke in the prefrontal cortex, he was told the standard advice many TBI patients hear: wait and give it time. As a scientist, he knew that wasn’t enough. He understood how quickly secondary brain injury processes—like swelling and inflammation—can worsen outcomes if not addressed.

So he designed his own recovery protocol. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was part of it—but never the whole story. He combined HBOT with nutrition, gut health, sleep optimization, breathwork, meditation, hydration, and progressive physical conditioning.

One statement from our conversation stuck with me:

“Hyperbaric oxygen doesn’t cure anything. It puts your body in the right position to heal itself.”

That’s an important distinction—and one that often gets lost in wellness marketing.

Standards and Safety Matter

While HBOT is generally safe when administered properly, proper training, medical oversight, and adherence to device protocols are paramount.

Dr. Dituri is outspoken about this. Oxygen under pressure is classified as a drug. When it’s used without proper standards—or treated as a casual wellness trend—it puts patients and the entire field at risk.

That warning aligns closely with how we think about wellness at Liquivida.

Without those, no chamber—no matter how advanced—can do the heavy lifting.

The Bigger Lesson

If there’s a common thread in the research, in Dr. Dituri’s work, and in my own experience, it’s this:

Healing and optimization are rarely about one intervention.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not a miracle. But it can be a powerful tool when used appropriately. For wellness-conscious individuals, the most responsible approach is curiosity paired with discipline—asking hard questions, demanding evidence, and choosing providers who value safety and education over hype. Your body wants to heal. The real work is giving it the right tools, in the correct order, for the right reasons. holistic life is all about.
