Rewrite Women’s History: Embrace Midlife Transformation

March 1, 2026 by Dr. Liz Lyster

Rewrite Women’s History: Embrace Midlife Transformation—March is Women’s History Month—a time to honor the resilience, brilliance, and evolution of women across generations. For me, this month is also personal. March 10th was my grandmother’s birthday. She would have been 112 this year. She was the one person for me that every child deserves—someone who loves you unconditionally, no matter what.

She once dreamed of becoming a pharmacist, but in her era, her family required her to marry instead. A generation later, my mother became a doctor, stepping boldly into a path my grandmother never had the chance to walk. Their lives, their choices, and their limitations have all shaped who I am today—and why I am so passionate about women’s health, empowerment, and rewriting what is possible for women in midlife.

As a Women’s Midlife Health Expert, my life’s work is helping women regain energy, lose weight sustainably, restore libido, rebuild confidence, and feel like themselves again. Every day, I help women reclaim the spark, vitality, and connection with themselves that our mothers and grandmothers were never taught was possible.

To help you step into this same empowerment, you’ll find five practical tools below that you can begin using immediately to support your own midlife journey.

Women’s History Month invites us to reflect on how far we’ve come—and how far we are still rising.

Most Women Never Reached Menopause

For most of human history, women did not even reach the age of menopause. Until early last century, only about one in 20 women reached age 50!

This means that for centuries, women’s health—especially menopause—existed behind closed doors. Information was scarce, conversations were whispered, and symptoms were dismissed as “just the way it is.” There was no language to describe hormonal shifts, emotional rebirth, or the spiritual transformation of midlife. Women navigated these changes silently, often alone.

A New Era for Menopause

But today, we stand in a new era.

Information is accessible. Women are reclaiming our bodies, our joy, our choices, and our voices. We are breaking generational patterns of silence and creating a global movement of empowerment. Modern midlife is not a decline—it’s a revolution.

And menopause—once hidden—is now at the center of this awakening.

The Body: From Silence to Science to Self-Advocacy

Historically, women were not taught how their bodies worked. Menopause was minimized or misunderstood. A lack of research, education, and open conversation left generations of women untreated and unheard.

Women’s History Month reminds us that even the language of women’s health is new. Terms like “perimenopause,” “adrenal fatigue,” and “bioidentical hormone therapy” barely existed decades ago.

Today, knowledge is finally catching up with lived experience. Women now know they can:

  • Check their hormone levels
  • Support metabolism through strength training
  • Use food as medicine
  • Advocate for bioidentical hormone therapy
  • Understand adrenal health
  • Regulate cortisol and sleep cycles with nervous system tools.

This is progress. This is power. Menopause is not something to suffer through—it is something to navigate with clarity, confidence, and support.

The Mind: Emotional Truths Women Are Finally Allowed to Speak

A profound shift is happening: women are encouraged to voice the emotional aspects of midlife. Grief. Identity transitions. Purpose shifts. New desires. The shedding of old versions of ourselves.

For generations, women were taught to “just muscle through,” to perform through pain, and to silence their emotional experience. But modern women are rewriting the script.

We are learning that:

  • Emotional health is strength
  • Grief is a teacher
  • Midlife transitions are gateways
  • Boundaries are acts of courage
  • Reinvention is a birthright

After losing my husband, I learned firsthand how grief and midlife can intertwine. It cracked me open—but it also deepened my understanding of what women need: compassion, space, emotional intelligence, and community.

Today, women are better supported than ever before—yet we continue to push this movement forward.

The Soul: Its Voice Grows Louder

Spirituality has always been part of women’s lives, but for many, myself included, the soul’s voice grows louder in midlife.

Historically, women were praised for giving but discouraged from awakening. Post-reproductive life was framed as a decline. But today, we know better.

We recognize menopause as:

  • a return to intuition
  • a sharpening of inner wisdom
  • a rise in purpose
  • a reclamation of joy
  • a spiritual homecoming

Women now embrace practices once hidden or stigmatized, such as mindfulness, breathwork, somatic release, community circles, energy healing, and nervous system regulation. We unite ancient wisdom with modern science to claim our wellbeing.

Joy in Midlife: The Liberation Our Ancestors Never Had

Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers didn’t have the tools or the support we have now.

They didn’t have:

  • Online education
  • Hormone testing
  • Safe conversations about sexuality
  • Holistic healing resources
  • Communities devoted to empowerment
  • Global conversations about menopause
  • Women physicians specializing in midlife

We are the first generation with this level of access—and we are using it to create joy our ancestors could only imagine.

Joy is not frivolous.

Joy is not a luxury.

Joy is a revolution.

And for women in midlife, joy is a declaration of sovereignty.

Five Practical Tools You Can Start Using Today

1️⃣ Check Your Hormones Get a comprehensive hormone panel so you understand what’s shifting—and what your body needs to feel balanced again.

2️⃣ Add One Strength Habit Start with something simple: 10 minutes of strength training twice a week. Small steps create big change.

3️⃣ Support Your Emotional Wellbeing Choose one grounding ritual—journaling, breathwork, or a weekly walk—to help you stay centered and connected.

4️⃣ Find Your Circle Join a community of women in midlife. Support accelerates healing, clarity, and confidence.

5️⃣ Book Your Midlife Health Consultation

Give yourself a dedicated session with a trusted women’s health expert to map out your personalized path to more energy, better sleep, and feeling like yourself again.

These are the tools our mothers and grandmothers didn’t have—and the tools that allow modern women to rewrite their entire midlife experience.

A New Story for Women Everywhere

This Women’s History Month, we honor the women who endured without language, without support, and without acknowledgment. We honor women like my grandmother—brilliant, capable, and limited by the constraints of her time.

We honor my mother’s generation, who broke new ground and opened doors. And we honor every woman today who asks questions, seeks support, and refuses to “just accept” not feeling great.

We research.

We learn.

We speak openly.

We advocate.

We empower.

We rise.

Menopause is not a burden—it’s a transformation.

Midlife is not a loss—it’s a rebirth.

Women’s health is not just medicine—it’s liberation.

As we expand access, education, and empowerment, we honor the women before us and build a future where every woman enters midlife supported, informed, and vibrantly alive.

This Women’s History Month, we don’t just reflect on history—we rewrite it.
