The Hidden Risks of Botox and Fillers No One Talks About:

March 1, 2026 by Judy Hahn

Why I Chose a Different Path to Aging Gracefully

The Hidden Risks of Botox and Fillers No One Talks About: Why I Chose a Different Path to Aging Gracefully – As a former Functional Wellness Coach, I’ve always been passionate about helping people get to the root cause—not just masking symptoms. So when it came to aging gracefully, I asked myself the same question I’ve asked countless clients: What are the long-term effects of what I’m putting into my body?

While Botox and dermal fillers are marketed as safe, simple solutions to wrinkles and volume loss, emerging research and firsthand experience tell a more complicated story—one that more people deserve to hear.

These procedures may offer instant gratification, but what are we sacrificing for that momentary result? The following is just some information I felt compelled to share. Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin type A, one of the most potent neurotoxins in nature. It works by temporarily paralyzing muscles to smooth the appearance of fine lines—typically in the forehead, between the brows, and around the eyes.

It’s often referred to as “safe” in small doses, and millions of people get it every year. But “safe” and “risk-free” are not the same thing. As with many quick fixes in the beauty and wellness world, the story becomes more nuanced the deeper you go.

The more I work with the brain, which is my primary business focus, the more protective I become of that remarkable organ. I could go on about sugar and its effects on brain health, but since I work with Korean skincare, I’ll stay within that arena. Studies have shown that botulinum toxin doesn’t always stay at the injection site—even when administered properly. One study in animal models showed that the toxin injected into peripheral muscle was later detected in the brainstem, suggesting that it had traveled through the nervous system in a process called retrograde axonal transport (Matak et al., 2012).

This raises important concerns about the long-term impact on the nervous system. If a neurotoxin can travel through nerve channels, what might it be doing to delicate systems over time—especially after repeated exposure?

Some individuals report symptoms such as muscle weakness in other areas, eyelid drooping, dry mouth, headaches, and even fatigue post-treatment (FDA, 2022). Are these isolated incidents or signals of something bigger? We simply don’t have enough long-term human data to know for sure.

Here’s something most people don’t realize: using Botox regularly doesn’t mean you’re “resetting” the clock—it means you’re teaching your muscles not to move. Over time, this can lead to muscle atrophy, altering your facial structure and potentially aging you in other ways.

In addition, facial expressions are part of how we connect with the world. Smile lines and crinkles are signs of a life well-lived. Paralyzing those expressions not only numbs your face—it can numb parts of your personality as well.

Even more concerning is the lack of long-term human research. We don’t yet know how repeated exposure to neurotoxins might affect hormonal pathways, immune function, or cognitive performance over a decade or more.

Then there are dermal fillers, most often made from hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin. That sounds safe, right? Not so fast.

What many clients don’t realize is that these fillers, while marketed as “temporary,” often remain in the body far longer than expected. In some cases, imaging studies have detected filler particles five or more years after injection (Rauso et al., 2020).

There’s also the issue of delayed hypersensitivity reactions. Your body might accept the filler today, but six months or even a year later—after a virus, dental procedure, or vaccine—it might suddenly see that filler as a foreign invader. The result? Painful swelling, nodules, or inflammation that’s hard to treat (Sclafani, 2013).

More rarely, but far more seriously, fillers have been linked to vascular occlusion, where the product blocks a blood vessel. This can lead to permanent tissue damage—or even blindness. It’s rare, yes, but is any wrinkle worth that risk?

There’s a psychological component that often gets overlooked. Botox and fillers are marketed as empowering—and for some, they may feel that way. But the truth is, many people start with the intention of “just trying it once,” and years later, they’re still chasing their old face.

It can become a cycle of dependency. You lose sight of your natural beauty, constantly comparing yourself to filtered photos or your younger self. And emotionally? That kind of self-criticism is exhausting.

For a hot minute, I actually considered trying Botox. I had a big event coming up, and I was feeling a little pressure from the mirror—and from friends who swore by it. But every time I really sat with the decision, something in my gut didn’t feel right. As someone with Emotional Authority in Human Design, I’ve learned to wait for clarity rather than jump into quick fixes. And the truth is, the more I researched, the louder my inner voice got: ‘This isn’t for you.’

That was the moment I realized—I didn’t want to numb my face or gamble with my nervous system. I wanted a path that aligned with how I live, love, and lead: rooted in wholeness, wellness, and wisdom. I believe our bodies are intelligent. They respond to how we nourish them, how we speak to them, and how we care for them. That includes our skin.

My background in functional wellness taught me that what you put *on* your body matters as much as what you put *in* it. Your skin absorbs everything; there isn’t a filtering system, so toxins and chemicals head directly for the bloodstream. That’s why using clean, barrier-supportive skincare is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself.

And let me be clear—this isn’t about judgment. I am here to educate and share the science you may not know. If you’ve used Botox or fillers, you’re not wrong or bad. You’re human. You deserve to feel good in your skin. I just want you to know there are other ways—safer, smarter, more sustainable ways—to age with grace and glow.

If you’re feeling the nudge to explore something different, something more aligned, I’m here for you. I love walking women (and men too!) through these decisions and helping them reconnect with their natural beauty—not the filtered, photoshopped version sold to us by billion-dollar beauty brands, but the real thing. The radiant, confident, you-shaped version of beauty.

With Riman’s clean, Korean skincare—especially the newly upgraded ICD Ritual—I’ve seen incredible results that rival any injectable. We’re talking deep hydration, brighter tone, firmer texture, and real elasticity that comes from the inside out.

These results weren’t instant—but they were lasting. And they came with zero side effects, no risk of migration, and no dependence on a practitioner or needle. I just needed to be consistent with using my Riman products twice a day… and I never would have believed I would do it. But once I saw the changes and felt the difference in my skin, it was a no-brainer and became something I actually enjoyed doing for myself.

The best part? I still look like me—just refreshed, nourished, and confident. Aging shouldn’t be something we fight. It should be something we honor. Real beauty isn’t about erasing lines—it’s about living in a face that reflects your truth, your energy, and your joy.
