Your Inner Power Reset: What to Release Before the New Year

December 1, 2025 by Theresa Byrne

Your Inner Power Reset: What to Release Before the New Year –December is the season of light, and it is one of my favorite months. Not just for the sparkle of lights or the comfort of warm drinks, but for the invitation it carries. This month isn’t only the end of a year; it’s the threshold into what’s possible—something completely new. A doorway we get to walk through, lighter or heavier, depending on what we choose to carry forward.

The truth is, most of us step into January with our hands too full. We’re holding onto old disappointments, unfinished goals, or the voice of our relentless inner bully whispering, “You should have done more. You should be further by now.” Our inner voice is NOT US, and it doesn’t mean harm, but it thinks it’s keeping us safe; left unchecked, it drags us into another year already exhausted.

This is why I created this Inner Power Reset. It’s a chance to reflect, release, and realign before the clock strikes midnight. Instead of charging into 2026 with any old baggage, you can step in clear, grounded, and ready to go.

Step 1: Reflect Without Judgment

Reflection is powerful, but it’s not a scorecard. Too often, people look back and only see the gap between where they are and where they thought they “should” be.

Which is just another opportunity to beat yourself up. Instead, I want you to reflect with curiosity.

Ask yourself:
  • What am I proud of this year?
  • What surprised me?
  • Where did I feel most like myself?
  • What felt heavy or out of alignment?

Write down your answers without editing or justifying. Even one or two words can give you clues. Reflection like this isn’t about dwelling; it’s about understanding the terrain you’ve walked.

InPower® Tip: If your inner bully chimes in, gently notice it. Say, “Thank you for your concern,” and then redirect back to curiosity. Curiosity leaves space for growth. Criticism closes it down.

Step 2: Release What Doesn’t Serve

The nervous system clings to what’s familiar, even when it hurts. That’s why intentional release is so powerful. Before you start adding new goals and visions, make space by letting go of what no longer fits.

Write down three things you’re ready to release. Maybe it’s a habit, a harsh belief about yourself, or a way of showing up in relationships that no longer works. Then choose a small ritual to symbolize your release.

  • Rip up the paper and throw it away.
  • Burn it in a fireplace or candle flame.
  • Place it under a rock outside, giving it back to the earth.
  • Your brain loves physical closure, like the action of letting go, which helps anchor the choice.

InPower® Tip: In martial arts, every bow is both respect and reset. After your ritual, bow to yourself. Acknowledge the courage it takes to release what’s familiar, even when it no longer serves.

Step 3: Reset Your Energy

Releasing clears space, but resetting restores strength. You can’t create a new future from an exhausted state. A drained nervous system can’t hold big dreams. That’s why simple energy resets matter.

Try this:

Stand tall. Inhale through your nose. Exhale with a sharp “Ha!” sound three times. Repeat until you feel present and steady.

Shake out your hands, arms, and legs. Movement tells your brain, “I am safe; I am strong.” Take a brisk walk outside, even for five minutes, to reset your rhythm and your mind.

These small practices regulate your nervous system and recharge your mental clarity.

InPower® Tip: Energy doesn’t come from doing more. It comes from alignment. Even two minutes of deliberate reset can shift your state from scattered to centered.

Step 4: Choose What to Carry Forward

Now that you’ve reflected and released, you have a choice: what do you want to carry into the new year? Instead of piling on resolutions that often fizzle by February, I encourage you to choose one guiding quality.

Ask yourself: What is the quality I most want to embody in 2026?

Maybe it’s courage. Maybe it’s calm. Maybe it’s creativity. Maybe it’s fun. Write it down and keep it visible … on your mirror, in your phone, or as a screensaver.

This word becomes your north star. When you’re faced with decisions, ask: Does this bring me closer to my word or pull me away from it?

InPower® Tip: Qualities transform us in ways numbers can’t. Numbers motivate, but qualities shape who we become.

A New Year, A New You (Only If You Choose)

Here’s the truth: January 1 doesn’t magically transform our lives. If we carry the same old weight into the new year, we’ll end up repeating the same old patterns. But if we take time in December to reflect, release, reset, and choose, we step into the new year differently.

The Inner Power Reset isn’t about perfection. It’s about permission. Permission to stop beating yourself up for what didn’t happen. Permission to honor what did. Permission to release the labels or limits that no longer fit.

So before you raise your glass at midnight, take ten quiet minutes for yourself. Light a candle. Ask the questions. Release the old. Reset your energy. Choose your word.

Your future self will thank you. And you’ll walk into 2026 not weighed down by who you’ve been, but lit up by who you’re becoming.

Because here’s the secret: The strongest power you’ll ever have isn’t in what you do. It’s in who you choose to be.

In Case No One Told You Today:
  • You’re not too much.
  • You’re not behind.
  • And you’re definitely not broken.

Retriggering is a sign you’re human. And healing. If you need support, I offer sessions to help calm your nervous system.

So the next time an old (unwanted) pattern rears its gnarly head? Smile. Nod. And remind yourself, “I see you. We’ve met before. But I don’t hang out here anymore.” It’s handled with care. If you’re an empath, know you don’t have to suffer under the weight of the world. You can learn to hold space for others without losing yourself in the process. And that’s true empowerment.
