Your Thoughts Are Talking… Are You Listening?
Pause for a second. Not your body… Your mind.
What have your thoughts been whispering to you today?
Perhaps they said, “I am tired.” Perhaps they shouted, “I cannot do this anymore.” Or maybe, quietly in the background, they whispered, “I am scared.”
The truth is, your thoughts are always talking. But the greater question is: are you listening?
The Power of the Inner Voice
Over the years, I have seen how a cancer diagnosis does more than challenge the body. It amplifies the mind. The voice inside becomes louder. Some days it acts as your cheerleader, reminding you of your strength. Other days, it becomes your harshest critic, feeding you fear, doubt, and worry.
And here is what I have learned: the conversations you have with yourself are among the most important you will ever have.
Because your thoughts set the tone for how you experience your healing.
When the Mind Fights Back
One patient once told me, “Kenny, my biggest battle is not the chemotherapy… It is the voice in my head that keeps saying, you are not strong enough.”
That struck me deeply because it was not her body that was giving up; it was her mind that was under attack. And she is not alone. Many people battling illness carry that same internal struggle. The loudest lie our thoughts often tell us is that we are powerless. That we do not have what it takes. That we are not enough.
But let me tell you this… You are stronger than you think.
Listening Does Not Mean Believing
Now, I am not saying to ignore your thoughts. In fact, I want you to listen more closely. But here is the key: listening does not mean believing.
Your thoughts will come and go like waves. Some will lift you higher; some will try to pull you under. Listening allows you to recognize them for what they are, but you get to decide which ones deserve your attention.
When fear whispers, “What if the cancer comes back?” you can hear it, acknowledge it, and then choose to respond with, “Right now, I am here. Right now, I am alive. That is what I will focus on.”
That choice is where your power lies.

Training Your Thoughts Like Muscles
Think of your thoughts like muscles. The ones you exercise most often become the strongest.
If you constantly replay thoughts of fear and doubt, they will grow stronger and take up more space in your mind. But if you begin to nurture thoughts of hope, gratitude, and resilience, even in small ways, they will grow stronger.
It is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about choosing which thoughts you want to give your energy to. Just like the body, the mind requires training, repetition, and practice.
Tools for Tuning In
So, how do you start listening in a healthier way? Here are a few simple practices:
Journaling: Write down your thoughts without judgment. You may be surprised at what comes out when you give yourself space to listen.
Breathing: A slow inhale and exhale can calm the noise in your mind long enough for you to hear what is truly there.
Affirmations: Replace a defeating thought with a healing one. For example, instead of “I am weak,” try “I am learning to rest so I can grow stronger.”
Community: Sometimes the best way to check your thoughts is to share them. Speaking out loud to someone you trust can quiet the lies and amplify the truth.
Thoughts as Part of Healing
Here is what I want you to remember: your thoughts are not separate from your healing; they are part of it. The way you talk to yourself can either drain your strength or feed your resilience.
I have walked with patients who told me the most challenging work they ever did was not in the treatment room; it was in their own mind. It was catching the negative thoughts before they spiraled, replacing them with hope, and reminding themselves daily that healing is not only physical, it is also mental.
Your Invitation to Listen
So let me ask you again: your thoughts are talking—are you listening?
Perhaps it is time to lean in. To notice what your mind has been saying on repeat. To challenge the lies and nurture the truths.
Because when you listen intentionally, you get to choose what story your thoughts will tell. And you, my friend, deserve a story filled with courage, hope, and peace.
Healing begins in the body, but it continues in the mind. And the more you listen to the voice inside you—the kinder, braver voice… The more strength you will uncover along the way.
So take that breath with me again. Slowly. Out slowly. And this time, let your thoughts know:
I hear you.
And I choose hope.
