10 Skincare Mistakes You’re Probably Making (And How to Fix Them) – As a former functional wellness coach with a passion for holistic health, I’ve seen firsthand how proper skincare can transform not just your appearance, but your overall well-being. Let’s dive into some common skincare mistakes you might be making and how to correct them for a healthier, more radiant complexion.
1. Using Products That Don’t Address All Skin Needs
One of the most common misconceptions in skincare is that you need completely different products for day and night use. While your skin has varying needs throughout the day, the ideal approach is to use products that focus on all the needs of your skin cells, both day and night.
Your skin is constantly working to maintain its health and repair itself. Although repair functions are most significant during nighttime, the right skincare products can support these processes around the clock. Look for multi-functional products that offer a range of benefits, including ingredients that hydrate, protect, and support cell renewal.
Well-formulated products can accommodate various skin types and areas, including the face, neck, and décolletage. This means you don’t need separate products for each area or skin type. Instead, focus on finding high-quality, comprehensive skincare solutions like Riman that address multiple concerns simultaneously thanks to their focus on skin health at a cellular level rather than skin type or skin areas.
2. Inconsistency in Your Skincare Routine
Consistency is key when it comes to skincare. Many people expect instant results from their products, and when they don’t see immediate changes, they give up or switch to something new. However, most skincare products need time to work their magic.
It typically takes about 4-6 weeks for your skin to complete a full cycle of cell turnover. Give new products at least this long to show results before deciding whether they’re effective for you. Create a routine and stick to it. Your skin will thank you for the consistency, and you’ll be better able to track what’s working and what isn’t.
3. Neglecting Your Neck and Décolletage
Your skincare routine shouldn’t stop at your jawline. The skin on your neck and chest is just as exposed to environmental stressors as your face, yet it’s often neglected. The skin in these areas is actually thinner and more delicate than facial skin, making it more prone to signs of aging like fine lines and sunspots. When applying your skincare products, make sure to extend them down to your neck and chest area.
4. Using Hot Water for Cleansing
While a hot shower might feel great, it’s not doing your skin any favors. Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even breakouts. It can also exacerbate conditions like rosacea and eczema. Instead, use lukewarm water when cleansing your face. This temperature is gentle enough to cleanse effectively without disrupting your skin’s natural balance. After cleansing, you might even want to try a final rinse with cool water, which can help tighten pores and boost circulation.

5. Relying on a Single Cleansing Method
What I learned while trying the Riman products was if you’re only using one method to cleanse your face, you might not be getting your skin as clean as you think. This is where the concept of double cleansing comes in. Double cleansing involves using an oil-based cleanser first to remove makeup, sunscreen, and other oil-based impurities, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining dirt and sweat. This two-step process ensures a thorough cleanse without stripping your skin. I can’t believe the change in my skin since doing the dual cleansing.
6. Skipping Sunscreen
This is perhaps the most crucial skincare step that people often overlook. Sun damage is the leading cause of premature aging, not to mention the increased risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen should be a non-negotiable part of your morning routine, regardless of the weather or whether you plan to spend time outdoors. UV rays can penetrate through clouds and windows, so your skin needs protection even on cloudy days or when you’re indoors. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and make sure to reapply every two hours if you’re outdoors or exposed to sunlight through windows.
7. Ignoring Potentially Harmful Ingredients
In our quest for perfect skin, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends and miracle products. However, not all ingredients are created equal, and some can even be harmful to your health. Take the time to read and understand ingredient lists. Look out for potentially harmful ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances. These can disrupt your hormones and cause skin irritation. Instead, opt for products with natural, nourishing ingredients such as Riman’s tiger grass, and remember that Riman bans 3000 toxic ingredients allowing it to protect your health and wellness inside and out.
8. Sleeping with Makeup On
We’ve all been there – you’re exhausted after a long day, and the thought of going through your skincare routine seems daunting. But sleeping with your makeup on is one of the worst things you can do for your skin. When you sleep in makeup, you’re trapping dirt, oil, and environmental pollutants on your skin. This can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and even premature aging. It can also prevent your skin from going through its natural renewal process during sleep.
No matter how tired you are, always take the time to at least remove your makeup and cleanse your face before bed. Your skin will thank you in the morning! I never thought I would take the time to use multiple steps/products both morning and night, but having seen the results, I am dedicated to those 5 extra minutes before hitting the pillow to use my Riman Radiansome 100 ritual. (I use the Expert Riman Ritual in the morning and the advanced ritual in the evening)

9. Over-Exfoliating
Exfoliation is an important step in any skincare routine, but too much of a good thing can be harmful. Over-exfoliating can damage your skin’s protective barrier, leading to irritation, sensitivity, and even breakouts. The frequency of exfoliation depends on your skin type. For most people, 1-2 times a week is sufficient. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to limit it to once a week or even less.
Remember, exfoliation doesn’t always have to be physical (like with a scrub). Riman’s snow enzyme cleanser and active clean-up powder, which are enzyme-based, are perfect choices to use. But if you notice your skin needs a break from a product, listen to it. Dual cleansing is important, but you need to be aware of how your skin is responding to your skincare ritual.
10. Forgetting the Impact of Lifestyle on Skin Health
Your skincare routine is important, but it’s not the only factor affecting your skin health. What you eat, drink, and how you live your life all play a crucial role in the health and appearance of your skin. A balanced diet, proper hydration, quality sleep, and stress management all contribute to a radiant complexion.
By avoiding these common mistakes and adopting a holistic approach to skincare, you can nurture your skin to its healthiest, most radiant state. With Riman’s comprehensive skincare solutions, you’re not just treating your skin – you’re investing in your overall well-being.
