3 SuperFoods for “Head to Toe” Health!

July 1, 2023 by Patricia Riley

3 SuperFoods for “Head to Toe” Health! – Maintaining good health is important. Here are 3 SuperFoods praised for their health benefits for thousands of years and shown in recent studies to be very effective: pomegranate, elderberry, and cranberry.

POMEGRANATE:

Pomegranates are mentioned in the Bible and illustrated in ancient Egyptian art. Scientists have found they are high in polyphenol antioxidants, which help protect against oxidative stress and inflammation. Pomegranates protect the heart, brain, and circulatory system, improving blood flow, and benefit the urinary tract, kidney, and bladder. Studies have shown that pomegranate extract can help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (1), and may help to reduce the risk of kidney stones (2).

ELDERBERRY:

Elderberries have a long history of use in traditional medicine. Studies have shown that elderberry extracts can reduce the duration and severity of cold and flu-like symptoms. Studies have also shown that elderberries may be beneficial for the heart and brain. They help to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, improve circulation, maintain normal blood pressure, and support heart health (3,4).

CRANBERRY:

Cranberries support urinary tract health due to levels of proanthocyanidins, which help prevent bacteria from attaching to the walls of the bladder and urinary tract. Based on scientific evidence of effectiveness, the FDA has approved the claim that supplements with at least 36 PACs (proanthocyanidins) may help reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs (urinary tract infections) (5).

Cranberries are also beneficial for prostate health. Prostate enlargement, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common condition in men over the age of 50. Studies have shown that cranberry extract may help to reduce the symptoms of BPH, such as urinary frequency and urgency, and improve the overall quality of life (6).

Pomegranate, cranberry, and elderberry help keep your skin youthful. They are rich in antioxidants, which protect against UV damage and environmental stressors that contribute to collagen breakdown and premature aging. They can improve hydration and elasticity (7), improve skin smoothness and reduce the appearance of fine lines (8).

Surprising New Benefits

As research continues to advance, studies show that pomegranate, elderberry, and cranberry may offer many potential health benefits. For example:

  • Pomegranates have anti-inflammatory effects and protect the heart, joints, skin, and immune function (9).
  • Elderberries help reduce upper respiratory tract infections (10).
  • Cranberries help promote GI and heart health (11).

Whether consumed through diet or in supplement form, these SuperFoods can help protect you from a range of health issues.
