Stay Balanced and Grateful This December

December 1, 2024 by Andrea Schwartz

Stay Balanced and Grateful This December

Stay Balanced and Grateful This December – December is a magical time of year, filled with celebrations, family gatherings, and the joy of the holiday season. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or both, this month is rich with traditions and moments of gratitude. December is special for my family as we celebrate Christmas in St. Thomas, USVI.

This tropical paradise has become our annual retreat, where we gather with loved ones, walk on the beach, snorkel, and create cherished memories. As we navigate this festive season, staying consistent with our wellness routines, embracing gratitude, and enjoying a healthy and happy holiday is essential. Here’s how I approach December with these goals in mind.

Consistency

The holidays can easily disrupt our routines with travel, celebrations, and indulgent foods. However, I’ve found that maintaining consistency in my health habits during December is crucial for my physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In St. Thomas, our days often begin with a walk along the beach. The sound of the waves, the warm sand, and the gentle sea breeze create a peaceful start to the day. This daily walk reminds me that there’s always time for self-care and movement, even amid holiday festivities.

Staying consistent doesn’t mean adhering to a strict routine. Instead, it’s about incorporating healthy habits into your holiday plans. Whether it’s a morning walk, a swim, or a few minutes of meditation, these small acts of consistency help me stay balanced and fully enjoy the holiday season.

Gratitude Practices

December is a time for giving, reflecting on the year, and expressing gratitude. For me, gratitude isn’t just a holiday thought; it’s a daily practice that enhances my overall well-being. During our Christmas celebration in St. Thomas, I take a few moments each day to reflect on the many blessings in my life. The island’s beauty, my kids’ laughter, and my family’s warmth fill me with deep gratitude. Writing these reflections in my journal has helped me maintain a positive outlook and focus on what truly matters.

Sharing gratitude is also important. On Christmas Eve, as we gather for dinner, we go around the table, and each person shares something for which they’re thankful. This tradition brings us closer and reminds us of life’s abundance. Whether celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or both, incorporating gratitude into your holiday traditions creates a more meaningful and fulfilling experience.

Mindful Eating

The holiday season often means indulgent meals, but mindful eating allows me to savor these moments without overindulging. Mindful eating is about savoring each bite, paying attention to hunger and fullness cues, and truly enjoying the season’s flavors. In St. Thomas, our holiday meals blend island flavors with traditional dishes. We might enjoy freshly caught fish with a vibrant tropical salad or baked sweet potato latkes with Greek yogurt for Hanukkah.

Focusing on the food quality and the company, rather than the quantity, helps me enjoy the meal without feeling overdone. After dinner, we often take a leisurely walk along the beach, letting the gentle waves soothe our senses as we reflect on the day.

Balancing Holiday Traditions with Wellness Goals

Balancing holiday traditions with wellness goals is vital to a joyful and stress-free holiday. Our Christmas celebration in St. Thomas includes traditions like decorating the tree with seashells and playing beach volleyball. These activities keep us moving and engaged, allowing us to enjoy the holiday without neglecting our health.

I also create a menu that honors Christmas and Hanukkah traditions while being mindful of nutrition. These dishes are delicious and nutritious, allowing us to enjoy the season’s flavors without compromising our health. By making thoughtful choices, we celebrate the holidays with joy and gratitude, knowing we care for ourselves and our loved ones.

The Power of Gratitude

Navigating midlife’s challenges has shown me the power of gratitude in maintaining wellness. With its focus on family and celebration, December is the perfect time to embrace this practice. Each year in St. Thomas, I’m reminded of how blessed I am to have a close-knit family. Watching my children grow, seeing their joy as they play on the beach, and sharing our family traditions fills me with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. These moments keep me grounded and motivated to stay consistent with my health habits.

December Wellness Challenge

As we move through December, I invite you to join me in a wellness challenge focused on gratitude and consistency. Commit to one consistent health habit daily—a morning walk on the beach, a yoga session, or simply drinking enough water. Pair that with a daily gratitude practice, like journaling or sharing something you’re grateful for with a loved one. This challenge is about finding balance during a busy season, staying connected to our wellness goals, and cultivating a spirit of gratitude that will carry us through the holidays and into the new year.

Stress Management

While the holidays are joyful, they can also bring stress. For me, managing stress begins with mindfulness. Before the day gets busy, I take a few moments to center myself—whether through yoga, meditation or simply sitting with a cup of water while watching the sunrise over the ocean.

During our time in St. Thomas, I also carve out moments of relaxation. After snorkeling, there’s nothing better than unwinding with a good book or sitting on the porch listening to the waves. These peaceful moments help me stay calm and present, even during holiday activities.

December is a month of celebration, reflection, and gratitude. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or both, it’s a time to cherish the people we love and create lasting memories. By staying consistent with our health habits, embracing gratitude, and balancing holiday traditions, we can enjoy a healthy, happy holiday season that nourishes both body and soul. I’m so grateful for my family, the traditions we share in St. Thomas, and the opportunity to connect with all of you on this wellness journey. Happy Holidays!
