Going Deep And Staying Light

June 2, 2024 by Corey Lyon Folsom

going deep and staying light

Going deep and staying light are learned skills. The person who only talks about deep issues becomes a self-centered bore. However, you can be a deep person that people want to be around by simply living with calm, contained energy.

Your deep knowing is always available, but you have to intentionally tap into it. Feeling your depth is a way of filling up your ’emotional and spiritual well’. When you slow down enough to feel an inner calmness, your experience of outer life will slow down. This doesn’t require a large time commitment, just pressing pause on listening to the noise of everything else.

Silence can be your sanctuary from thoughts and worry. Connecting with the silence within may be all you have to do to increase personal serenity and optimism. The place inside that feels like home (where everything is okay) is a wonderful place to keep returning to.

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.

-Anne Lamont

To balance the distraction and bustle of the world; slow down and feel your center. This can be as simple as making time to close your eyes and watch your breath. As you breathe, allow your awareness to sink beneath surface thoughts. Sometimes I’ll visualize my mind as a muddy glass of water that becomes clear as the particles settle to the bottom. My thoughts settle along with the contents of this imaginary glass.

I like the term Stop, Drop and Roll as shorthand for getting quiet and getting connected. By slowing down, we can better feel who, what and why we are. STOP and press pause on external input. DROP into your quiet center. ROLL with what shows up.

Within you, there is a stillness and a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.

-Hermann Hesse

There remains a deep part of you that never forgets who and what you are. Your soul has answers that silence lets you hear. You deserve to inhabit the state that is your natural home. To get from your head to your heart, remind yourself to just feel. When you slow down enough to be connected to your inner calm, the outer life slows down a notch or two. The world is still spinning, but there is peace and comfort in knowing where your center is.

Soul Statements

  • Stillness is my natural home.
  • When my head and heart are connected, I am brave and unstoppable.

To remain light, simply be interested in what matters to the person you’re with. Offer your presence more than whatever’s in your mind. Dial up the feeling of you by bringing a little more of you to the room. Being conscious of your value and your values allows for a measure of self-assuredness where you don’t feel compelled to share your process or insights in every interaction. You’ll naturally find yourself increasingly content to listen to others without commentary or critique.

Personal Journaling Exercise

  • How often do I pause to feel my inner silence?
  • When and how can I make space to quiet the world for a time each day?

It is a worthwhile habit to access inner stillness and touch the sanctuary at your center. Silence holds answers. When you increase kindness on the inside, you’ll naturally treat other people better. People who appreciate depth and kindness will gravitate to you. Dial up the feeling of you and be interested in what other people have to say. Ask follow-up questions to demonstrate your engagement and curiosity.

A great gift to give yourself and others is a peaceful mind. I am a fan of stillness as its own practice. Stillness can be its own prayer. Stillness is a form of soul nourishment. Integrated clarity calls up the best version of you. The big question at any given moment is whether you will step up and claim yourself. Make a commitment to your self-connection and clarity. Being centered and resourced from within serves you and everyone that you interact with.
