The Freedom Formula: How to Stop Overgiving and Start Receiving

The Freedom Formula: How to Stop Overgiving and Start Receiving

If you are the person everyone counts on, you probably do not notice how much you give until you feel drained. You might even feel a little resentful, then guilty for it right after. Overgiving does not always look like neediness. It often looks like competence, loyalty, and being the one who handles it.

The issue is that when giving becomes your default, receiving starts to feel uncomfortable. You brush off compliments, you reject help, and you say “I’ve got it” even when you do not. It can feel easier to do everything yourself, but it trains the people around you to rely on your constant availability.

The freedom formula is simple. It is learning to show up without abandoning yourself and to let support in without feeling like you have to earn it.

THE OVERGIVING PARADOX

You might think that people who overgive are just nice people who like to please. That is true for many who try to prevent disappointment, conflict, and rejection. But overgiving is not only a generous or kind act. It is a way to keep control, rooted in the belief that if they stop carrying the weight, everything will fall apart.

I see this often with my clients, especially high achievers who need to manage outcomes in every situation.

It also comes with a hidden payoff. When you are the dependable one, you rarely have to risk being the one who needs support. You keep the power, and you feel useful and safe.

This works until the day you realize you have built a life where people can depend on you, but you do not know how to depend on anyone. You become the one who is always “fine” until you are not. You start feeling like people take you for granted, yet you trained them to.

That’s the overgiving paradox.

Most people who play the strong one and complain about not receiving help because no one offers, are not receiving it because they are not available for it. They played the dependable role for so long that no one even notices they need anything.

Another layer of the paradox is the complicated relationship with receiving help, as it can be equated with weakness, debt, or loss of control. High-functioning people assume that help comes with strings attached, or they worry it will change how they are seen.

So they keep giving, because giving feels powerful. Receiving feels vulnerable.

If this is you, the goal is not to become passive or dependent. The goal is to find the freedom formula.

The Freedom Formula

THE FREEDOM FORMULA

The freedom formula starts with awareness because you cannot change a pattern you still call normal.

Pay attention to where you add extra without being asked. It can be extra explanations, effort, availability, or even extra responsibility. In those moments, ask yourself a simple question: “What am I trying to prevent right now?” The answer is usually not about the task. It is about discomfort.

The next part is learning to pause. Many people who overextend step in early because waiting feels uncomfortable. They do not want to risk things being messy, imperfect, or tense, so they take control by taking over. The pause is not passive. It is a decision to let other adults carry their share, even if it looks different than how you would do it. It gives someone else space to step up, and it teaches you to tolerate the urge to manage the entire outcome.

The final part is practicing clean receiving, which means letting support land without turning it into a performance. When someone offers help, allow yourself to say thank you and accept it. When someone compliments you, let it sit instead of deflecting it. When someone shows up for you, resist the reflex to immediately repay them so you can feel “even” again. Receiving does not create a debt. It is a normal part of a healthy relationship.

START YOUR FREEDOM FORMULA THIS MONTH

This month, choose one place where you stop automatically overgiving. Pick one moment where you pause, breathe, and let yourself respond from truth instead of pressure. Then choose one moment where you let yourself receive something without rushing to pay it back.

If you need support identifying your overgiving patterns and learning how to shift them without blowing up your relationships or your life, grab my Relationship Reset Map. It will help you see where you overextend, what it is costing you, and what to change first so your life starts feeling lighter.

Remember, freedom is not having less to do. Freedom is living in a way that does not require you to abandon yourself to keep everyone else comfortable.
