The Power of Grace… Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit

The Power of Grace… Healing Body, Mind, and Spirit – If there’s one truth I’ve seen over and over again in my work with women navigating peri-menopause, pre-menopause, and menopause, it’s this…

We are our own harshest critics. Somewhere along the way, we’ve been taught that strength means pushing through, holding it together, and never admitting when we’re tired, overwhelmed, or simply human. Here is some truth talk … our bodies, our minds, and our spirits are not meant to run endlessly without rest. And yet, many of us struggle to give ourselves the very thing we so freely extend to others…

I’m talking about GRACE.

Why does grace matter? I mean, who has time for that, right? Grace isn’t indulgence. Grace isn’t a weakness.

Grace is permission.

It is the radical act of saying, “I am human, I am worthy, and I don’t have to be perfect for my life to have value and purpose.”

Research backs this up. Studies have shown that self-compassion, a first cousin to grace, has profound effects on both mental and physical health. Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneer in the field of self-compassion, has found that women who practice self-kindness instead of self-criticism experience lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression (Neff, 2011). And these aren’t just emotional benefits. Chronic stress is linked to higher inflammation, disrupted sleep, and even increased risk of cardiovascular disease (American Psychological Association, 2020).

When we deny ourselves grace, we’re not just hurting our hearts… we’re harming our health. Let me ask you… What does the internal dialogue you have with yourself on a recurring basis sound like? And I want you to be honest with yourself here, because most of us would never speak to a friend the way we speak to ourselves. Yet, inside our own minds, we can be downright cruel…

“You should be doing more.” “You’re not enough.” “Why can’t you keep it together?” These phrases, repeated day after day, become heavy burdens we carry. Want to hear some good news about this? I thought so…

Enter neuroscience … and tremendous hope. You see, our brains are remarkably adaptable. By consciously shifting our internal dialogue, catching ourselves in criticism, and replacing it with kindness, we can actually begin to rewire our neural pathways. This practice doesn’t erase our challenges, but it can transform how we walk through them. #BOOM

How full is your “cup”? You cannot pour from an empty cup, but many of us try to do so consistently. Whether it’s showing up for family, colleagues, or friends, we forget that filling our own cup is not selfish; it’s essential. Research from the Journal of Behavioral Medicine (Sirois et al., 2015) found that individuals who practiced self-compassion were more likely to engage in health-promoting behaviors, from eating well to exercising, simply because they believed they were worth caring for. P.S.… You are worth caring for!

Grace looks different for everyone. For one woman, it may be a long walk by the water. For another, saying “no” to one more responsibility. For someone else, it’s five minutes of journaling before the day begins. The how doesn’t matter, but the intention does.

Let’s address the perception of perfection. Many of us hold tightly to perfection, believing it’s the key to success or acceptance. But perfection is a mirage, always dancing JUST out of reach. Letting go isn’t about lowering standards; it’s about recognizing that your worth isn’t tied to flawless performance.

Getting real with ourselves during the menopause transition becomes key. Hormonal shifts can affect mood, energy, and focus. Expecting ourselves to operate at the same pace as in our 30s isn’t realistic. It’s downright unkind. Grace invites us to recalibrate and say, “This season is different, and that’s okay. I am still me. I am still valuable. I still have great purpose.”

What if grace were as essential to your health as food, sleep, or movement? Turns out it actually is. The Mayo Clinic notes that practicing self-compassion can lower cortisol levels, improve immune function, and foster resilience (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2021).

Think of grace as medicine, not the kind you pick up at a pharmacy, but the kind you generate from within. Every time you release the need for perfection, or silence the critic in your head, or pause to refill your cup, you’re giving your body a dose of healing.

And here’s an even more beautiful element to all this… grace doesn’t stop with you. When you learn to soften toward yourself, you naturally soften toward others. Relationships grow stronger, patience deepens, and empathy expands. As you give yourself permission to be human, you create a ripple effect that touches everyone around you. So today, I invite you to pause. Take a deep breath, and say to yourself… I am worthy of grace. I am enough!

You do not need to earn rest. You do not need to prove your worth. You do not need to hold yourself to impossible standards to be loved… especially by yourself.

The changes you experience during perimenopause, pre-menopause, and menopause are not only physical transitions. They are invitations. This is a call to honor yourself in new ways. To listen more deeply, to love more freely, and to let go of what no longer serves you. When you give yourself grace, you don’t just survive these seasons; you thrive in them…

And this, my friend, you deserve. all of it. Remember what I said above … “We are women; hear us ROAR?” I want to hear you roar, ladies, because you are fabulous, sexy, badass, and you deserve to enjoy every dang second of that.
