You don’t need an hour-long meditation or a retreat in Sedona (though let’s be honest, it wouldn’t hurt). You just need small, consistent signals of safety.
Try this:
When you feel your stress rising, pause and name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste.
This “5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique” brings your body back to the present moment—reminding your brain: we’re safe right now.
Micro-moments compound. Take a deep breath in the car before you walk into a meeting. One minute of sunshine between tasks. One hand on your heart when you feel overwhelmed. Safety, repeated often, rewires your entire system.
2. Let the Energy Move Through You
When your nervous system activates, it releases energy meant to move—not be bottled up.
Think about animals in the wild: after a chase, they shake. Humans don’t. We internalize.
Start letting your body discharge that energy safely.
Dance for two minutes to your favorite song.
