Let’s rewind when the mere mention of parenthood sent shivers down my spine. You see, my journey to motherhood was no leisurely Sunday stroll. It was more like a wild rollercoaster ride through a hormonal jungle. It involved countless fertility treatments, the emotional turmoil that could rival a Lifetime movie, and enough anxiety to make anyone’s heart skip a beat. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have moments where I thought my dream of having children might never come true.
Fast forward a few years, and after countless heartaches and tears, I finally got to cradle my beautiful babies in my arms. The road to motherhood had been a treacherous one, paved with uncertainty and sprinkled with the magic of hope.
Midlife: A Time of Transformation
Reflecting on my life’s journey and its winding paths, one thing becomes abundantly clear: midlife and beyond is a truly transformative period, especially for us women. It’s that chapter when our roles as devoted mothers, dedicated wives, and successful professionals begin to shift. It’s when we finally get to put ourselves first, embrace the beauty of aging, and strut our stuff with grace and confidence.
The Balancing Act of Life
As a dedicated Health and Fitness Professional, my journey has always been about balancing my passion for health and wellness and my responsibilities as a parent. I’ve constantly strived to lead by example, showing my children the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. In doing so, I not only prioritized the physical and mental health of my loved ones but also instilled in them the knowledge and habits required to fuel their bodies and minds for a lifetime of wellness. But, sometimes, throughout my journey, I’ve found myself placing the needs and well-being of my family ahead of my own and neglecting my fitness routine, commitment to healthy eating, and mindfulness.
Picture this: for most of my life, I was a seasoned multitasker extraordinaire. I poured my heart and soul into being the best mom I could be. I was the chief chauffeur, shuttling my kids to lacrosse, baseball, and basketball games. I was the homework helper, the school event enthusiast, and the provider of a warm and loving home.
My husband and I worked tirelessly to keep the spark alive in our relationship amid the chaos. But, yes, there’s a “but” – my devotion to family and career often came at the expense of my own self-care. When juggling responsibilities, it’s easy to put self-care on the back burner. My weight saw more ups and downs than a rollercoaster; my energy levels were a mystery, and personal time? Well, it was as elusive as a unicorn. Can you relate?
I felt guilty if I did take time for myself. I just wanted my kids to be happy, safe, and feel loved. They were my number one priority, and I always put my kids first for their health, wellness, and happiness. My kids were my whole world, and I wouldn’t change a thing, but little did I know the profound consequences of neglecting self-care.
The Empty Nest Syndrome: A Time of Transition
Eventually, the day came when my children packed their bags for college. Our home suddenly felt empty, and I was hit hard by the infamous “empty nest syndrome.” It was a transition from a bustling household to the stillness of an empty nest, and boy, did it leave me feeling untethered. The days of carpooling, helping with homework, and preparing family dinners became fond memories. The reality of having an ’empty nest’ was something I hadn’t entirely prepared for. Our kids actually enjoyed hanging out with me and my husband! Suddenly, we went from a party of five to a table for two. My heart was heavy.
The departure of our children for college or to start their own lives elsewhere can stir up a mix of emotions. For me, it was a concoction of sadness and a heavy dose of disorientation. The roles that had defined my life for decades were shifting, and I had to adapt.
The Turning Point: From Within
It was during this phase that I had a profound realization – it was time for a change, not just on the surface but deep within. The journey to motherhood, the struggles with fertility, and the parenting challenges had profoundly shaped who I was. But it was time to step back and focus on my well-being. Like my mother always said, ” You have to pick yourself up by the bootstraps and fill that emptiness with something meaningful.”
I recognized that this was the moment to reclaim my inner strength, the strength that had seen me through years of fertility treatments and parenting, and radiate beauty from the inside out.
Mental and Emotional Wellness: Nurturing the Mind and Heart
The first step in my transformation was taking care of my mental and emotional well-being. I began each day with meditation, allowing me to center myself and start the day with a sense of calm and purpose. This practice wasn’t just about finding peace but also about reconnecting with myself and understanding my needs and desires. It was a small practice, but it made a world of difference in how I approached each day.
Stress management became a crucial part of my daily routine. I learned to journal my thoughts and feelings, providing an outlet for my emotions and gaining insight into my inner world. This practice helped me untangle the knots of worry and stress that had accumulated over the years. It was a form of self-discovery, a way to understand my triggers and learn to manage them effectively.
The Importance of Physical Health: Nourishing the Body
Physical health was another vital aspect of my journey. I realized I needed to nourish my body with wholesome foods and regular exercise. I make sure to fuel my body with protein, healthy fats, and fiber- it not only makes me feel good but helps against age-related diseases. After years of going hours without eating due to a busy schedule, I made it a point to have a healthy breakfast every morning. This one simple change profoundly impacted my energy levels and overall well-being.
Having been in the fitness industry for almost 30 years, teaching 1-2 classes daily while caring for my kids (they practically grew up in a gym), I truly believe movement is crucial to overall health and well-being. Exercise became a priority not just in my life but also in my children’s lives. I firmly believe that 30-45 minutes of daily movement, whether walking, cycling, hiking, running, or whatever activity you enjoy, is all it takes to stay healthy.
In addition to that, strength training 2 to 3 times a week is imperative to keeping our muscles and our bones strong and healthy. Movement and strength training not only improved my physical strength but also boosted my confidence. I found that regular exercise was not just about physical health but also about mental clarity and emotional balance.
Holistic Approach to Self-Care: Nurturing the Spirit
I began to see self-care as a holistic journey, encompassing not just my body but also my spirit. I paid close attention to the foods I consumed, opting for whole, nutrient-dense, seasonal, and local options whenever possible. What we eat truly does show up on our skin, and I wanted to glow from the inside out. What we consume is essential for our brains, hearts, and guts; everything is connected. Did you know 90% of our serotonin is produced in our gut? Keep your gut healthy to radiate happiness! Eating the rainbow is a beautiful thing!
Exposing myself to morning sunshine became a part of my daily ritual. It not only helped regulate my circadian rhythm but also improved my sleep quality, which is paramount for my overall well-being. The simple act of taking in the natural beauty of the world around me each morning became a form of meditation in itself.
Tailoring Self-Care to Unique Needs: A Personalized Approach
One important lesson I’ve learned is that self-care isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Every woman is unique, and her challenges during midlife and beyond are equally distinct. As a coach, I’ve had the privilege of working with various clients, each with their own symptoms and needs.
As I embarked on my journey, I guided my clients on theirs. We delve deep, addressing mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of their lives. We take our time to understand the root causes of their concerns and work together to create tailored solutions. This approach acknowledges that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to self-care. Instead, it’s about finding what works uniquely for each individual.
Navigating the Waters of Menopause and Peri-Menopause
The challenges of midlife are not limited to fertility, parenting, and the empty nest syndrome. As women, we also face the tumultuous waters of menopause and peri-menopause. These hormonal changes can bring about a range of symptoms, from hot flashes and mood swings to sleep disturbances and changes in metabolism. It’s a time of immense transformation, and no two women experience it in the same way.
Navigating these changes can be daunting, and it’s a journey that often leaves us searching for solutions. That’s where holistic healing comes into play. Creating a Healthy Environment: Minimizing Toxins
Self-care extends beyond our bodies. I emphasize the importance of creating a healthy environment, from using non-toxic skincare to selecting household products that are safe for our well-being. While we can’t eliminate all toxins from our lives, we can make conscious choices to reduce our exposure.
In my own home, I’ve made an effort to minimize toxicity as much as possible. We focus on whole foods, eat clean, and make choices that benefit our overall health. It’s a continuous journey, but it’s one that we embark on together, making gradual changes to our lifestyle and environment to prioritize our well-being.
Embracing Life with the 80/20 Rule: Balancing Discipline and Indulgence
While discipline and self-care are essential, I also believe in the beauty of balance. Life is fleeting, and it’s meant to be lived. I encourage my clients, as I encourage myself, to embrace the 80/20 rule when it comes to eating. You might be wondering what the 80/20 rule is, 80% eating clean and 20% eating decadently; it allows for occasional indulgences and moments of pure enjoyment.
Vacations, adventures, and celebrating life’s milestones are essential. They remind us that life is an incredible journey meant to be fully experienced, regardless of age. Finding the balance between discipline and indulgence is a crucial aspect of self-care that enhances our overall well-being.
The Power of Yoga and Meditation: Cultivating Mindfulness
Two practices that have profoundly impacted my life are yoga and meditation. Yoga offers not only physical benefits in terms of flexibility, strength, mobility, and balance but also serves as an exceptional stress reliever. It’s a practice that can be adopted at any age and adapted to individual needs.
Meditation, even if it starts with just a few minutes each day, has the remarkable ability to ground us in the present moment. It fosters inner peace and mindfulness, making our daily lives more vibrant and meaningful. Through yoga and meditation, I’ve found a sense of serenity and balance that has positively influenced every aspect of my life.
The Importance of Relationships: Nurturing Connections
Amid our busy lives, we must recognize the profound importance of relationships – with family, friends, and partners. These connections are the threads that weave the fabric of our lives, providing support, love, and a sense of belonging.
Don’t hesitate to take that girls’ trip you’ve been dreaming of or embark on that retreat that nourishes your soul. A romantic weekend getaway with your partner can rekindle the spark that brought you together. Lunches with your mom, dinners with your sister, and quality time with friends are pleasant experiences vital for your mental and emotional health.
Our social lives play a significant role in our overall well-being as well. They provide us opportunities to share laughter, seek solace in times of need, and create lasting memories. Prioritizing these relationships is a form of self-care, contributing to our emotional resilience and happiness.
The Role of Beauty in Self-Confidence: Feeling Beautiful at Every Age
Beauty is a concept that transcends age. It’s not about trying to look young forever but rather about feeling confident and radiant at every stage of life. I’ve discovered that investing in high-quality skincare products and experimenting with makeup can make a world of difference in how I perceive myself.
Beauty routines are not just about appearances but about self-expression and self-confidence. They allow us to present ourselves to the world in a way that aligns with our inner beauty and self-assuredness. Embracing beauty as a form of self-care has been a transformative part of my journey.
I Choose How I Age: Aging with Intention, Humor and Joy
As women, we’re often giving away our energy to so many things around us. We can now fill up our cups and focus on ourselves. We deserve our own love, affection, and care. So, here’s the deal: I choose to age with intention. Why? Because I’m the boss of my own aging process. To age with inner beauty, humor, and joy is my mission, and I’m sticking to it.
Let’s face it – those fine lines are just laugh lines in disguise. Every wrinkle tells a story, and I’ve decided that my story is a comedy, not a tragedy. Besides, there’s nothing a little humor can’t fix. I’ve stocked up on wrinkle cream (non-toxic, of course!), but it’s not for my face; it’s for my sense of humor!
Sure, gravity may be working against me, but I’ve got my positive vibes and my smile fighting back. The older I get, the more I realize that age is just a number, and I lost count a long time ago (who’s counting anyway?). I’m determined to fill up my cup, focus on myself, and shower myself with love, affection, and care. Why? Because I deserve it, and you do, too! It’s time for self-love on a whole other level! It’s a journey that allows us to feel beautiful at any age and shine with inner strength.
