The Best Food To Wake You Up

January 25, 2020 by Dr. Dixie Short 2 Comments

Have you ever wondered why the saying, “An apple a day will keep the doctor away,” became so popular? Well, you are in luck because, in this article, we will teach you all about the magic within this tiny fruit. Not only will you learn why apples are a must for everyone, but this article will also provide you with an amazing recipe that can help keep you warm all season. In addition, this article will discuss the multiple ways an apple a day can improve not only your overall health but your mood and wellness too. Are you ready to hear all about the healing powers within this fruit?

Morning Buster

Let’s face it, and morning can be difficult. Not everyone is a morning kind of person. Personally, I am more of a night owl, and I tend to not roll into bed until two or three in the morning. That can make it even more difficult to wake up. While this epidemic seems to send most people zombies walking to the nearest pot of coffee, a select few know this powerful secret. Did you know that the mere scent of an apple is more effective at waking you up than that of a cup of coffee? Crazy right, this makes apples an ideal choice for your morning meal.

Lean & Mean

Apples are not only great at getting you up and on your way, but they are also perfect for aiding in weight loss and management. Apples are high in fiber which aids in digestion and helps keep you feeling full longer. The fiber in apples also helps lower the risk for heart disease and aids in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. Apples are also low in calories and high in water content, which helps the body naturally detox and removes excess weight stored in toxins. When our bodies come into contact with something they either do not recognize or consider an enemy, they encase it in fat as a form of protection. As a result, our bodies force out these fat-encased toxins during detox, which results in a lower number on the scale.

Knowledge is Power

Apples are great for your brain activity. They contain high levels of boron, which stimulates electrical activity of the brain and increases mental alertness. Apples also help produce Dopamine in the body, which helps to improve: memory, mood (feelings of joy or bliss), motivation, and focus. Apples may not be rich in calcium, but their high levels of boron make it a great food to prevent osteoporosis and strengthen bones. In addition, a 2006 study published in the journal Experimental Biology and Medicine found that quercetin (one of the antioxidants found abundantly in apples) was one of two compounds that helped reduce cellular death caused by oxidation and inflammation of neurons. Once again, highlighting what makes apples so desirable in daily nutrition.

Beauty at Every Age

Apple contains numerous enzymes that nourish the skin and help to keep it hydrated. It’s also great at firming the skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The skin of an apple is packed full of anti-aging antioxidants, making apples a must for any beauty routine. Some studies show that plant chemicals and the fiber in an apple peel protect against blood vessel and heart damage. They also can help lower your cholesterol, and they might protect your cells’ DNA from something called oxidative damage, which is one of the things that can lead to cancer.

Research shows that antioxidants in apples can slow the growth of cancer cells. And they can protect the cells in your pancreas, which can lower your chances of type 2 diabetes.

The Power Behind The Fruit

Clearly, eating apples comes with multiple health benefits. One of the best things about consuming apples is the taste! Apples are one of the most consumed fruits in the United States due to the sweet yet mild flavor. Apples are satisfying to consume independently, but they are also easy to integrate into other dishes without overpowering the dish. The next time you find yourself in a bit of a slump, be sure to make apples you are new go-to food. As promised, here is a great recipe that is sure to get you up and moving all winter long.

Hot Apple Quinoa Cereal

Gluten Free Vegan Serves 2

  • 1 Pear
  • 1 Apple
  • 2 Tbsp Pure Maple Syrup
  • 1 tsp Sea Salt
  • 1 Cup Apple Juice
  • 1 Cup Water
  • 2 Tbsp Coconut Milk
  • 1 Tbsp Raw Coconut Oil
  • 1 Cup Quinoa
  • 2 Tbsp Almonds Chopped
  • 2 tsp Chia Seeds
  • 2 Tbsp Pumpkin Seeds
  • 2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon

Directions:

In saucepot, cook quinoa in water, apple juice, 1 teaspoon lemon juice, and ½ teaspoon of sea salt. While quinoa is cooking (takes around 5-10 minutes depending on type and stove), saute apple and pear in coconut oil. While fruit is cooking, add remaining lemon juice, salt, and cinnamon. I like to warm the pumpkin seeds and almonds in with the fruit, but you can always add them, room temp, over the top of the quinoa once the quinoa is cooked, place into bowls, and top with fruit and nut mix: drizzle syrup, remaining seeds, and milk over the top. Enjoy hot or warm. I also like to add a spoonful of almond butter when I need an extra kick of energy. Enjoy!

It is, and the best part is that apples are more effective at waking you up than caffeine and they help keep you full longer! I hope you like it as much as I do.
