Strong as a MOTHER – Foreign object.
Ladies, did you know that an unborn fetus in gestation is considered to be a foreign object by our body?
Your immune system SHIFTS when you get pregnant.
Fun Fact: for all of my girlies that have been placed in the autoimmune bucket…pregnancy, in spite of everything going on inside of us, is usually a time when we feel OUR BEST.
The body is BRILLIANT enough to know that it’s not supposed to eject this temporary visitor thus, it changes the way it’s showing up in order to accommodate.
As I was writing this I stopped and pondered upon this thought…
If your body knows when it needs to take it down 10 notches to save a life perhaps it is also keenly aware of when it needs to take it up 10 notches to do the same
Your SYMPTOMS are HEALING responses and your body’s way of SHIFTING to meet the needs of YOUR system.
STOP TRYING TO CONTROL THIS RESPONSE!
Instead, take the invitation the body is extending you and meet it in its request.
I touched on those who experience autoimmunity above and want to take time to talk about how mold, which is growing in recognition, impacts that body and baby.
As a mama who dealt with mold (and didn’t know it at the time) who has a little one now dealing with it I want to elevate this conversation.
When we know better we can do better.
Here are the things I wish I had known PRIOR to getting pregnant when it comes to molds impact on mama AND baby.
The placenta is not a catch-all.
There are certain mycotoxins that can bypass the placenta and impact the unborn fetus
Prenatal exposure to mycotoxins has been shown to increase the risk of:
- Preeclampsia
- Pre-term birth
- Low birth weight
- Neural tube defects
- Impaired placental growth
- Jaundice: the risk has been found to increase two fold Elevated placental cytokines (aka inflammatory markers) There is infant exposure through breastmilk
Mycotoxin exposure for infants has been found to be common with the consumption of infant formulas, cereal, and fruit based products.
When a woman comes into practice desiring to bring a little one into the world we talk about how baby BECOMES what you are.
Pregnancy is something we get to prepare and train for like we would any other major athletic event in your life.
I experienced (5) of the above with my own pregnancy, delivery, child.
I had a major mycotoxin load I knew nothing about.
When you know better, YOU HAVE AN OBLIGATION to speak up.
There are a handful of studies being done on this very topic right now.
Much of the literature is coming out of other country’s, like Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
We are in the infancy stages of understanding mold exposure and mycotoxin illness.
While we wait for the science to catch up I’d point you to pay attention to the people who have LIVED the experience that’s being studied.
Big love, T
